'Thala 55' breaks a 'special' sequence

Ajith's birthday was celebrated yesterday (May 1) with much fervour by his fans and also by the media who lined up a lot of special programs, editions and movie premières. The recent Veeram was one such special movie which was enjoyed by quite a lot of audiences on TV yesterday evening.

Over the past few years, Ajith's birthday was also synonymous with some new update or the other about his under-production movies in those particular years. For example, in 2011 there was a Mankatha special teaser which was released on Thala's birthday while in 2012 Billa 2's music was launched and last year, Arrambam's teaser was released.

But this year, there was no special update about 'Thala 55', the upcoming Ajith - Gautham Menon film. Fans who were awake till 12 am on May 1 in the anticipation of seeing some exciting update about 'Thala 55' must have been a disappointed lot. The film got under-way in Chennai recently and also comprises the likes of Anushka, Arun Vijay and Vivek. More news about the movie is eagerly awaited.

A Birthday sans and Amarkalam for Ajith

Chennai: For die-hard fans of Thala, his birthday, which falls on May 1 (today), is as important a day as one of his movie releases. While Ajith has made it a point to disband his fan clubs all over the state, his ‘true’ fans go that extra mile to ensure that their favourite matinee idol’s birthday is not ignored.

Vinodh, who is the Coimbatore District Secretary of Ajith Fans, says that like last year, the celebrations will be kept low key. “This year, we will be celebrating by arranging food for everyone at the Seva Ashram here. Plus, notebooks and text books will be distributed to deserving children in the city,” says Vinodh.

“Sir doesn’t like us advertising the fact that it is his birthday. Sir has always told us not to spend money on promoting him unnecessarily — be it on his movie releases or his birthday. So we do this for our own satisfaction.” In Chennai, Sachin Mani, who used to be the President of the Ajith Fans Associaiton, before it was disbanded, details similar plans. “We are sponsoring food (biriyani) for all the residents of Bharat Mata Trust and sponsoring the education of 10 students. We will also give text books and notebooks to 300 students. We are providing annadhaanam through Samarpana, another charitable organisation,” says Sachin.

Although one of Ajith’s biggest hits, Amar kalam, was supposed to release at Albert Theatre on Friday, this has been called off. Sachin says, “Sir always told us not to celebrate by putting up posters and cut-outs of him — be it during the release of his film or on his birthday. He told us that if we were insistent on celebrating, we must do some sort of service to charity. We are merely honouring his words.”

Sridhar Sivakumar, an ardent fan of Thala’s, will also celebrate Ajith’s birthday by visiting an orphanage at Virugambakkam and serve biriyani to the needy. Although it is a special day for the fans, Sridhar is mildly upset about not being able to watch Amarkalam.

“We wanted to watch the film first. As we are unsure if it is going to release, we shall first go to the orphanage to offer some food. Last year, we cut a huge cake and celebrated on a grand scale. This year, we have planned to celebrate his birthday in a simple manner. Regardless of how we are going to celebrate, we will ensure that we follow his advice forever. Our Thala always says, ‘Live and let live!’ That is our life’s motto too. Happy birthday, Thala. We love you!”

Ajith's Birthday Special: Watch 'Veeram', 'Arrambam', 'Amarkalam' and 'Mankatha' on 1 May

This May Day (1 May) will be a big dhamaka for Ajith's fans. Fans of the actor will get to see some of his popular films on the big screen as well as on the small screen on the occasion of his birthday.

Ajith's 25th film "Amarkalam" will be re-released on 1 May. The mass entertainer is one of most-important films in the actor's career as it gave him the image of a mass action hero. The film, directed by Saran, has been digitally-restored and will be hitting the screens on May Day.

Ajith fans can also see special shows of the actor's 50th film "Mankatha" in some theatres. Directed by Venkat Prabhu, "Mankatha" had Ajith in a character with shades of grey. The actor won accolades from all quarters for his fantastic performance in the action thriller flick and it turned out to be a big hit in 2011.

On the occasion of his birthday, Thala will not only be seen on the big screen, but will also be dominating the small screens. Two popular TV channels will be screening Ajith's latest hit films on 1 May.

The actor's 2013-Diwali release "Arrambam" will be premiered on Jaya TV, while his 2014-Pongal release "Veeram" will be screened on Sun TV. Both these films achieved grand success at the box office. While "Arrambam" had Ajith in a stylish look, the actor appeared in a rural avatar in "Veeram".

"Arrambam," directed by Vishnu Vardhan, is action thriller flick with Ajith appearing in the role of a former bomb disposal specialist, who is on a mission to expose the scam regarding faulty bullet proof jackets. The film has Nayanthara, Arya, Mahesh Manjrekar and Taapsee Pannu in pivotal roles.

On the other hand, "Veeram" is mass masala entertainer and the film's story revolves around Ajith and his five brothers played by Bala, Vidarth, Munish and suhail. The film, directed by "Siruthai" Siva, has Tamannaah, Santhanam, Nassar and Pradeep Rawat in supporting roles.
